Mud/Wtr, MudWtr, MUDWTR & Mud Water - If you're a coffee lover or a health fiend, you may be seeing variations of this all over your internet feed at the moment.

And despite the various acronyms and different attempts at spelling - it all represents one product: this one

After purchasing one of their Morning Ritual Starter Kits and using the Mud Water 'Rise' blend (their flagship product) for over a month now, I'll take you through exactly what it is, everything I like about it and what I think could be improved.

In short, it probably won't be everyone's 'cup of tea alternative' - but I'm sure it will be much loved by others.

The MudWtr Coffee Alternative - My Comprehensive Review:

I'm instantly suspicious of any product that carries a lot of 'hype' - and boy does Mud Wtr have some hype. From YouTube to TikTok and back again, there are countless influencers joining the 'mud cult' (wait, am I an influencer?)

Anyway, that being said - everything deserves a fair run and after using it for a month, I have my own opinions (that I won't express in a TikTok dance).

What I Like

The taste:

From everything I've read so far, it seems that the flavour of MudWtr is its most divisive factor - with those that dislike it calling it 'mud' in a negative context, and those that love it calling it 'mud' in a positive light.

I for one, am a big fan of the flavour. Combining the richness and chocolate notes of cacao with the spice notes of a classic masala chai is a genius stroke in my opinion.

A genuinely good coffee alternative:

By this, I mean it's absolutely nothing like coffee.

It's not a replacement for someone who loves coffee and wants to wean themselves off it with something 'similar to coffee' - it's something else entirely.

It's more along the lines of a 'Chai Hot Chocolate' - and it's damn delicious in my opinion whether you're a coffee drinker or not.

The frother:

The Morning Ritual Starter Kit comes with a USB frother and to be honest, I thought this might have been a bit of a gimmick when I first pulled it out of the box. But, it works a charm and definitely improves the texture of the drink - giving it a proper frothy top!

It not only makes the Mud Water better, but it is a great addition to the kitchen drawer for coffee, matcha and any other situation where something needs a light whisking.

What I Think Could Be Improved

Sediment:

There's no denying it - by choosing to use whole spices, the Mud Wtr it gets a bit grainy as you approach the bottom of your cup. If you keep a teaspoon handy though and stir it as you drink it, you won't notice it. You can always strain it through a fine cheesecloth too if it really bothers you.

Independent 3rd Party Testing:

After having worked with numerous medicinal mushroom producers for years now, I always look for brands that proudly and transparently show off their 3rd party testing results for both purity and potential contaminants. Not to say that Mud Wtr do have any issues in these departments, they claim all of their mushrooms are USA-grown from highly reputable producers - but I'd like to be able to easily see for myself.

Price:

You can buy the original Mud Wtr, as either the 'Morning Ritual Starter Kit' or just as a single tin on either a subscription plan or as a one-off purchase.

The subscription plan is obviously a bit cheaper, but in my opinion, none of it is 'inexpensive'. I guess it's a premium product at a premium price - but it will be a bit rich for everyone's taste when it comes to reaching for the wallet.

I won't quote prices here because I think they change quite often - so you can check the latest prices here.

mud/wtr unboxing

In Summary:

Mud Wtr has rocketed in popularity on the back of some great marketing and a strong internet presence - but it is all actually carried on the back of a good product too.

The 'Rise' (which is their OG blend) tastes awesome, packs in some great ingredients and is a fun unboxing experience too if you get it in the Morning Ritual Starter Kit.

It is an expensive product in my opinion and it's clear that if you read enough reviews, the taste isn't for everyone. It does have over 36,000 reviews at an average of 4.5 stars on their site though, so they are definitely winning a lot of fans.

PROS:

  • Great tasting mix of cacao and masala chai
  • A solid 'coffee alternative' in all senses of the idea
  • A fun unboxing with some cool accessories

CONS:

  • It can be a bit grainy in texture
  • No 3rd party testing results available for the mushrooms
  • It ain't cheap

What Is Mud Wtr?

MUDWTR is a beverage brand that presents itself as an alternative to coffee. Born out of a desire to reduce caffeine dependence without sacrificing the ritual of morning brews, MUDWTR’s concoction blends a mix of organic ingredients known for their health benefits

Its original 'rise blend' includes cacao, masala chai, turmeric, sea salt, cinnamon, chaga, cordyceps, reishi, and lion's mane. These ingredients are known to possess various wellness properties, from boosting mental clarity to anti-inflammatory benefits.

Though it contains a fraction of the caffeine found in a regular cup of coffee, MUDWTR is designed to uplift and provide energy without the jitteriness or subsequent crashes often associated with high-caffeine drinks. The brand is rooted in offering a natural, earthy beverage choice for those seeking a departure from traditional caffeine beverages.

What Does MudWtr Taste Like?

If masala chai and hot cacao had a baby, it would be Mud Wtr.

I personally love the taste but it does seem to split people online (although, what doesn't divide people online now hey? 😉 )

It has the rich earthiness that you'd expect from raw cacao powder, combined with the spice and fragrance of a classic chai spice blend. If you follow the suggested 1 tablespoon serving size per mug it isn't overpowering at all - and you can obviously adjust in either direction if you'd like it stronger or weaker.

Personally, I like to add a bit of raw honey too to round out the flavour profile - but you can obviously add any sweetener you prefer - or maybe you're already sweet enough?

MudWtr Health Benefits: Are They Real?

As you can see above, Mud Water has a long list of ingredients that contribute to its unique taste, however, most of the potential health benefits of this brew come from the cacao and blend of different medicinal mushrooms. Even though the benefits of turmeric, cinnamon and ginger are quite well documented, it's unlikely that MudWtr contains super high concentrations of them.

As a long-time user, reviewer and general enthusiast of medicinal mushrooms, it looks to me like they've packed in some of the most effective, in a relatively decent quantity per serving. Again though, they don't provide much information on the potency, purity and extraction methods of the mushroom powders they use - so we do have to take them at their word on this one.

Here's a quick rundown on some of the traditional medicine and science-backed benefits of the medicinal mushrooms they've included:

Chaga Mushroom (Inonotus obliquus)

  • Antioxidant Properties: Chaga is rich in antioxidants, which can help combat oxidative stress and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
  • Supports Immune System: Chaga has been shown to modulate the immune system, potentially enhancing its ability to combat infections and diseases. This is believed to be due to the presence of beta-glucans, which can stimulate or suppress immune responses as needed.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)

  • Immune System Modulation: Reishi is known for its immune-boosting properties. Polysaccharides and triterpenoids found in Reishi are believed to enhance immune cell function and modulate the immune response.
  • Sleep benefits: Some studies have suggested that Reishi can help reduce sleep latency as well as increase total sleep time.

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus)

  • Neuroprotective and Cognitive Benefits: Lion's Mane contains compounds called hericenones and erinacines, which can stimulate the growth of brain cells. Studies have shown potential benefits in improving cognitive function and supporting nerve growth.
  • Mood and Anxiety: Some research suggests that Lion's Mane might have beneficial effects on mood disorders and anxiety. A study published in the "Biomedical Research" journal found that Lion's Mane intake reduced depression and anxiety symptoms in participants.

Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis)

  • Energy and Athletic Performance: Cordyceps has been shown to potentially increase the body's production of the molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is essential for delivering energy to the muscles. This can lead to improved exercise performance.
  • Anti-aging Properties: Cordyceps contains antioxidants which are believed to have anti-aging properties. These antioxidants can fight free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and potentially slowing down the aging process.

How Do I Make It?

Making your morning mud latte is as simple as it gets. It's honestly as simple as mixing a serve of mud powder with whatever hot liquid and sweetener you prefer - but just so there is no misunderstanding, here's a quick step-by-step on how to get it done:

  1. Drop 1 tablespoon of Mud Wtr 'rise' into your favourite mug and add enough hot water to be able to stir and dissolve it.
  2. Add 1 tsp of your favourite sweetener (raw honey works really well, but agave, maple or regular ol' sugar would also do the trick)
  3. Heat your favourite milk in a saucepan on the stove - but don't let it boil. Almond, coconut, oat or cow are all good options here.
  4. Top your mug halfway with your hot milk and then use the bonus frother to froth your milk. You only need to do this for about 5 - 10 seconds.
  5. Add the rest of your milk to the mug and sprinkle with a bit of extra mud powder if you're feeling fancy and want to make it look like a cappuccino.

A couple of options:

  • Sometimes I like to use a splash of cream instead of hot milk
  • You can also get their plant-based coconut milk and MCT oil creamer which seems to get people pretty excited

The best place to buy Mud Wtr is directly from the mud producers themselves by following this link right here or clicking any of the buttons and banners we've put in this article.

This will take you straight to their website where you will get the freshest stock and best pricing they currently have on offer.

Does MudWtr Only Have 1 Product?

Nope, they have a bunch of different blends now including matcha, turmeric, rooibos chai and mushroom mixes -  but their original 'Rise' blend is far and away the most popular - with over 36,000 customer reviews.

Does Mud Water Have Any Side Effects?

Minor bloating and nausea have been reported by a very small number of users - however, this isn't unique to this product and will occur when enough people eat or drink anything that they aren't used to consuming. Nothing in this blend in the quantity in which it is included is known to cause any major issues for most people, however, there are known side effects of chaga, reishi, lion's mane and cordyceps in a very small percentage of the population so if you're in doubt at all - speak to a health practitioner before using Mud Wtr.

FAQ:

Yep, MudWtr does contain about 35mg of caffeine. This is about 3x - 4x less than coffee (or matcha) and comes from the cacao content which gives a bit of a different feeling than the caffeine spike from coffee.

A 30-serving tin of MudWtr can last approximately one month if you drink it every morning - or less if you load up a few times a day like I have.

Is there a guidebook on how to use MudWtr?

The 'Morning Ritual' kit comes with a comprehensive book on everything you need to know about Mud/Wtr, the brand's ethos, general wellness advice and some spiritual guidance if it's at all needed!

Will MudWtr get me high or make me trip?

No, it's exciting stuff but not that exciting. The mushrooms in their blends are not hallucinogenic and have no psychoactive properties.

Can you drink Mud Water while pregnant?

This is a question that can and should only be answered by your doctor.
