What is Athletic Greens?
Launched and founded in 2010 by health and fitness expert Chris Ashenden, Athletic Greens or AG1 has now spent more than a decade researching, refining and testing its flagship product with the help of doctors, naturopaths and nutritionists to create a high-efficiency and nutritionally complete greens supplement. The result is AG1 Athletic Greens – a "Foundational Nutrition Supplement".
One scoop of AG1 by Athletic Greens contains a nutrient-dense blend of over 75 bio-available ingredients specifically designed to support gut health, immunity, digestion, and much more.
AG1 has been held to the highest quality standards possible - made in New Zealand in a TGA-registered facility and achieving the NSF Certification for Sport® - which is the gold standard for professional athletes who have to adhere to strict rules regarding supplements and nutritional products.
Further to this - Athletic Greens is also now Carbon Neutral Certified, a member of the How2Recycle program and also partners with world-changing organisations such as No Kid Hungry, Urban Light and Da Alegria which look to provide foundational nutrition to impoverished children around the world.
There are many Athletics Greens alternatives, however, it's long been the greens powder of choice for tens of thousands of happy customers - including some of the world's most famous high-performers such as Tim Ferris, Joe Rogan, David Sinclair, Lex Fridman, Andrew Huberman and Lewis Hamilton to name a few - but, you're probably wondering, what's it like for us regular folks?
What Does Athletic Greens Taste Like?
Athletic Greens has a taste that is earthy and vegetable-driven with a fruity pineapple and slightly sweet vanilla aftertaste. The flavour experience is similar to matcha, but with its own distinct character that is sweeter and without any harsh or bitter notes. It has one of the better flavours of all the greens powders we've tried and tested.
As for the texture, it's smooth and well-integrated, especially when you give it a good shake in the provided bottle. All in all, it stands out as one of the more agreeable greens powders in my opinion.

One serving of Drink AG1 contains several different categories of nutritional supplements such as 'green superfoods', adaptogens, whole foods, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, medicinal mushrooms as well as pre- and probiotics.
To specify, here are the four core blends in AG1 that have been formulated to target and support different aspects of health:
-
Alkaline, Nutrient-Dense Raw Superfood Complex: This blend includes ingredients like organic spirulina, organic chlorella, organic apple powder, inulin, and organic wheatgrass juice powder among others.
-
Nutrient Dense Extracts, Herbs, and Antioxidants: This section features alkaline pea protein isolate, citrus bioflavonoids extract, artichoke leaf extract, and adaptogens like ashwagandha and rhodiola root extract.
-
Digestive Enzyme and Super Mushroom Complex: This blend is composed of astragalus root powder, bromelain, and mushroom powders such as reishi and shiitake.
- Dairy-free Probiotics 7.2 billion CFU: The probiotic component includes two strains: Lactobacillus acidophilus - UALa-01 and Bifidobacterium bifidum - UABb-10.
Drink AG1 has designed their proprietary blend to provide comprehensive daily nutrition - allowing people to take one supplement that covers any nutritional gaps. That being said - no supplement, including AG1, is a replacement for real food and a healthy balanced diet
More importantly, if you do have a nutritional deficiency then you need to seek advice from a healthcare professional and not self-manage.
AG1 Ingredients List Review – A Pharmacist's Perspective on AG1 Greens
As a pharmacist who's worked in the supplements industry for over 10 years, AG1 by Athletic Greens stands out for its thoughtful formulation and quality of ingredients.
What I like about it:
Bioavailability: Unlike many greens powders that use lower-grade, less absorbable nutrients, AG1 incorporates highly bioavailable forms, enhancing the product's effectiveness. Notably, the use of methylcobalamin for B12—a form that's immediately usable by the body—ensures efficient absorption and reduces the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms which is very common these days. The inclusion of methylated folate (5-MTHFR) is another highlight, making it an excellent choice for those with the MTHFR genetic variant who struggle to process synthetic folic acid. These are just 2 examples amongst many other nutrient forms used that have great bioavailability.
Probiotics: AG1's attention to detail is also reflected in its probiotic strains. Each strain is specified down to the "numerical designation" eg Lactobacillus acidophillus UALa-01, which ensures strain-specific benefits backed by research. This level of precision sets AG1 apart from other brands that may use generic or unspecified probiotics.
Superfood Powders: The use of organic superfood powders adds an extra layer of quality, making this a clean, nutrient-dense choice.
One area that comes into question frequently is AG1's proprietary blend, which can leave consumers unsure of exact ingredient quantities. Supplements don't have the same patent laws to prevent competitors from using their exact formulas to try to gain market share. Hence, this approach is understandable in a competitive market; protecting their unique blend helps maintain their edge.
What you need to consider:
Missing nutrients: Whilst AG1 claims to be a "nutritional supplement" its product doesn't contain any vitamin D or iron in its formulation. Whilst iron will naturally occur in the raw superfood ingredients such as spirulina and chlorella, there are no signs of vitamin D. However AG1 offers a separate vitamin D3+K2 supplement with their welcome kits and double pouch subscriptions, which makes up for this gap at no extra cost.
Registrations and Certifications: One downside is that AG1 is not FDA-registered. In Australia, supplements are regulated by the TGA, which ensures both quality and safety, offering additional assurance for consumers. However, AG1 is NSF-certified, which provides a level of safety and quality for athletes and other consumers who want to ensure that they're getting a clean product, free from prohibited substances. NSF would be the equivalent to Australia's HASTA certification and would undergo rigorous testing to ensure their stamp of approval.
Shipping: Another downside, AG1 is not an Australian product, so customers in Australia face higher costs with currency conversion and shipping fees. If conversion fees weren't a factor and all currencies were equal AG1 is priced similarly to many other brands in the market.
Nonetheless having analysed a number of other brands in the market, the premium quality, thoughtful formulation, and rigorous certification make AG1 a standout product in the superfood market in my opinion.
Overall, nothing beats getting your nutrients from fresh fruit and vegetables and a balanced diet. But today's lifestyle can prove difficult and thus finding the right product that works for your needs is your number one priority.
Health-Conscious Consumer's Review of AG1 by Athletic Greens
As someone who's proactive about my health and has tried countless greens supplements, I have to say that AG1 by Athletic Greens really stands out.
I opted to take a greens supplement because I know I wasn't getting enough fruits and vegetables daily but preferred a more natural alternative versus and synthetic tablet. I tried and tested many products and did a lot of research and found AG1 to have an extensive formulation beyond your average vitamins and minerals.
What I like about it:
Active Nutrients: I've seeked advice from a Naturopath and nutritionist who diagnosed me with Pyrrole disorder. This condition strips essential nutrients like zinc and B6 from my system which impacts my mood and energy levels. Living with Pyrrole disorder, I'm always mindful of the nutrients I'm absorbing.
When I learned about AG1, I noticed they offered highly bioavailable forms of nutrients like methylcobalamin for B12, methylated folate (5-MTHFR), zinc citrate, and magnesium glycinate along with many more active nutrients which have made a noticeable difference for me. Since starting AG1, I feel like I'm finally getting the nutrients I need every day—something I rarely felt with other products.
Great Taste: Taste is important to me, and I've tried many greens powders that can taste overwhelmingly sweet, thanks to added sweeteners which are very unpleasant for me. AG1 has a fresh pineapple flavour that doesn't overpower with sweetness. It's subtle enough that I can drink it daily without getting sick of it, which is a huge plus compared to other blends on the market.
Aids in Digestion: AG1 has also improved my digestion. I've noticed smoother digestion, which I can attribute to the blend's digestive enzymes like bromelain and a variety of gut-supporting ingredients. I'm particularly impressed that AG1 includes ingredients like slippery elm powder and licorice root—two things my naturopath recommended for my gut health. These, along with probiotics and a mushroom complex, contribute to a gut-friendly formulation that works well with my system.
What you need to consider:
Texture: I will add, for those who don't like the protein mouth feel if you are sensitive to that, you may not like this texture which is slightly similar - only slightly which I find cold water and a good shake helps.
All in all, AG1 is a top-notch greens powder for anyone who needs high-quality ingredients and a comprehensive, convenient daily supplement. It's worth the investment if, like me, you're looking for something that's both effective and easy to incorporate into a busy routine.
Darcy's Athletic Greens AG1 Review:
Having now spent a lot of time with the AG1 supplement, I'm confident I can give you a thorough and honest review that will help you determine whether or not it's right for you.
What I like about it:
Made with high-quality ingredients: Every single ingredient that goes into Athletic Greens (all 75 of them!) is sourced for the highest quality and efficacy. In fact, Athletic Greens put so much care and attention into each and every one of their ingredients that they meet FDA and exceed cGMP guidelines by auditing and reviewing every supplier and manufacturer of each raw ingredient. Key nutrient call outs are active forms of B12, Folate (as 5-MTHF), naturally sourced Vit E and bioavailable forms of magnesium, calcium and zinc.
NSF Certified: NSF Certification offers consumers reassurance that the product in question meets all requirements and is of the highest quality and is appropriate for athletes to take whilst competing. Becoming NSF certified is a lengthy process including testing and verification on each one of the 75 ingredients! You can read about what being NSF Certified for Sport means here.
Suitable for Everyone: AG1 Greens is Paleo, keto and vegan friendly. It is also gluten-free and contains no artificial sweeteners or added sugars. In fact, it would be hard to find a diet or lifestyle that Athletic Greens isn't compatible with! If you want to see if Athletic Greens is suitable for you, click here to view the full list of allergens.
Great-Tasting: Consistently described as "the best tasting greens product" by thousands of happy customers, Athletic Greens powder is earthy with a slightly sweet and fruity aftertaste. This is a health drink you won't have to choke down but instead can look forward to taking every morning!
What you need to consider:
As far as greens powders go, this one is pretty expensive due to currency conversion. I personally think it's great value for money considering how nutritionally dense it is and if you appreciate the bioavailable forms of ingredients used, there's no doubt that this is one of the pricier options when it comes to powdered greens.

Where Can I Buy AG1 In Australia? (And The World)
There is no 'AG1 Australia'. Athletic Greens don't have any Australian stockists (or any physical stockists anywhere for that matter).
The best place to buy AG1 is directly from them by clicking the banners in this article. This is the best pricing and freshest stock you'll find anywhere.
How To Use Athletic Greens?
Due to its very manageable flavour, Athletic Greens can be simply mixed into water, or stirred into your favourite smoothie, juice or milk!
Athletic Greens suggest taking 1 scoop first thing in the morning on an empty stomach for optimal absorption. Simply grab a cup with 8-12 oz or 250ml - 350ml of cold water (more or less, depending on how you like it), then stir in a scoop of the greens powder until fully blended. It's important to add the water first as it allows the powder to mix in more easily. Then just drink it down and power on with your day!
We've made a quick video below showing you exactly how easy it is to prepare:
Does Athletic Greens AG1 Have Any Side Effects?
Very few side effects have been reported by users of Athletic Greens, however, as it is rich in fibre, probiotics and several adaptogenic herbs that many people may not be familiar with - it can cause some minor bloating and discomfort in some people when they first start taking it. This should be noted for people with IBS/IBD or are on a low FODMAP diet.
These effects appear to stop for most people after taking it for a few days and letting their bodies adjust to it. Start with a small scoop for the first few days if you're concerned about this and build up to a full dose over a week or two.
I personally haven't experienced any negative side effects from using AG1 over many years of consistently taking it.
Is Athletic Greens Worth It? Our Verdict
Combining our opinions - yes, Athletic Greens is 'worth it'. This is a very common question as it is a bit more expensive than other popular greens supplements, however, it covers more bases and kicks more boxes than most. This is of course a personal decision though, if you value quality.
So, while you might find cheaper alternatives, they might not match AG1's comprehensive and clean formula. Plus, if you're someone who's already spending money on various supplements or superfoods, AG1, being an all-in-one nutritional supplement, could actually save you a bit of hassle and maybe even some cash.
So, is AG1 worth the cost?
It boils down to your budget and how much you value quality and convenience in your nutritional intake. If these factors rank high on your list, AG1 could be a justified spend.

Our Favourite Athletic Greens Alternatives and Complements:
There's no shortage of greens powders on the market nowadays looking to compete with AG1 in particular.
In my experience, most people when searching for an AG1 alternative are looking for something less expensive - and while there are definitely cheaper 'greens powders' out there, they are rarely as comprehensive or as good quality.
That's also not to say that AG1 is the only good option - just be aware that there are always pros and cons when making your comparisons and that what might be the perfect option for someone, isn't the best choice for another.
We've built out the ultimate guide for assessing AG1 alternatives but here are some of our top picks of greens powder supplements if you're looking for something different:
