Athletic Greens VS EVERYTHING Else: 44 Brands Compared

Athletic Greens is probably the most popular greens powder on the planet right now - and for good reason.

It’s a high-quality supplement by almost any measure and we will openly admit that we are big fans of it here at The Bircher Bar.

But that doesn’t mean it’s the only great greens powder on the market. And it also has its shortfalls.

There are plenty of other contenders out there looking for that number-one spot - so, how do they stack up?

Below we will take you through the ultimate greens powder comparison guide - showcasing all of the key details and factors between Athletic Greens AG1 and all of the other major greens powder brands on the market.

Note: Our aim here isn’t to give you an in-depth review of every product and its benefits, nor is it to outline what we think are all of the Pros & Cons - it’s more to present you with the key facts and figures of every supplement in this category as they compare with the leader (AG1) so you can make your own informed decisions and do further research of your own.

What Are Athletic Greens?

Athletic Greens AG1 bundle

So, what is this supplement that’s causing all the fuss?

Athletic Greens launched in 2010 as the brainchild of Kiwi health and fitness expert Chris Ashenden. Since then, they’ve spent over a decade making more than 50 re-iterations of the product - improving time and time again to become the most popular greens powder on the planet.

AG1, and Athletic Greens as a company, now aligns itself with some of the best sourcing and testing standards available, supports a number of top-tier food charities and organisations and is the greens powder of choice for athletes and high-performers around the world.

That being said - it’s not the perfect solution for everyone - notably due to its high relative cost and use of proprietary blends which some users don’t like. If you want a quick look at AG! in the flesh - we’ve made a short and sharp unboxing video below:

And if you want to learn about all of the ins and outs of AG1 - read our full review here.

SuperGreen Tonik

Super Green Tonik is an all-purpose, vegan-friendly greens powder that’s completely free of artificial flavouring, preservatives, sweeteners, dairy, and soy. It is third-party tested, keto, and paleo-friendly.

It has a solid ingredient list in decent doses that are all detailed and outlined nicely so you can determine the exact proportions of each fraction. The manufacturer has not only included a nice array of effective greens but also a suite of nootropics and immune-supporting herbs.

The product's 365-day money-back guarantee is very encouraging and furthermore, the manufacturers also donate $1 of every sale to Vitamin Angles, a charity that supports mothers and children under five at risk of malnutrition.

Personally, this is my top pick at the moment as an Athletic Greens alternative

Vital All-In-One

Since its launch, Vital Greens All-In-One, with its recycled PET (polyethene terephthalate) plastic packaging, has caught the attention of consumers who seek environmentally friendly brands. But that alone isn’t why it has gained recognition as a strong contender to Athletic Greens AG1.

It claims to support overall health, including digestion, immune function, stress management, and liver health.

It is worth noting though that the Amazing Grass Greens Blend also uses proprietary blends, which makes it difficult to determine the exact amount of each ingredient being consumed.

We can’t currently find any third-party certification for heavy metals or contaminants, which may be a concern for some consumers.

One of the appealing things about the brand is its transparency. Green Vibrance openly and clearly displays the ingredient list and states its amount on the label. Unlike brands that choose to use proprietary blends, this helps consumers evaluate whether the product is as truly as potent as the manufacturer claims.

Huel Greens are positioned as a superfood greens blend that contains a staggering 91 ingredients.

The product is vegan, gluten-free and contains a wide variety of different supplements designed to provide a spectrum of different benefits.

It appears to be getting some solid reviews on different platforms however, it’s worth noting that the bulk of this product seems to be as a protein and superfood supplement. If you're seeking a concentrated source of greens nutrition, it appears that this product may not meet your expectations.

13.) Seed Probiotic vs Athletic Greens

Seed Daily Synbiotic

Launched in 2018, Seed is a relatively new name in the industry. However, since its launch, it has managed to capture the attention of many for its science-backed approach to probiotics and sustainability.

The brand currently only features a single product - the Seed DS-O1 Daily Synbiotic, which combines 24 probiotic strains with a non-fermented concentrate of Indian pomegranate.

According to Seed, these strains work synergistically to help support healthy gut bacteria and improve digestion.

The Daily Synbiotic itself is not cheap, but it is less expensive than most medical-grade probiotics and comes in sustainable packaging that can be reused.

Additionally, Seed partners are required to complete @SeedUniversity, a platform dedicated to community education, making Seed transparent and accountable.

14.) Ka'chava vs Athletic Greens

Kachava Superfood

Ka'chava is a plant-based supplement that is vegan-friendly and preservative-free with no artificial flavouring. It packs in a wide range of minerals, vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and adaptogens to name a few of the categories covered.

While it is labelled as a "meal replacement shake," nutritionists don't recommend replacing healthy meals with supplements and should only be considered as an addition to a diet, not a replacement

Ka'Chava's ingredients appear to be mostly organic and real food-based, with 85+ superfoods, digestive enzymes, and probiotics, making it a convenient on-the-go all-rounder.

While a lot of what’s included looks to be good stuff, I’m personally discouraged by any product claiming to replace a meal.

16.) Shakeology vs Athletic Greens

Shakeology

Beachbody Inc, the manufacturer of Shakeology, claims their product allows users to curb junk food cravings, promote weight loss, and improve their health.

While there are some decent ingredients in Shakeology, including quality protein sources and adaptogenic herbs, they are not really a ‘greens powder’ by any measure so aren’t really a comparable product to AG1.

One trial published in Current Developments in Nutrition included 41 adults who drank Shakeology or a calorie-matched shake 30 minutes before a meal of unlimited pizza and measured the effects on hunger and desire for further food intake.

The result indicated that Shakeology reduced hunger and the desire to eat more, however, this study was completely funded and conducted by Shakeology’s parent company Beachbody Inc. so I’d take it with a grain of salt.

17.) BulletProof Greens vs Athletic Greens

BulletProof Greens

BulletProof Greens combine a blend of 35 ingredients ranging from various probiotics, superfoods, digestive enzymes, minerals, vitamins, fruit, and vegetables.

The supplement is keto-friendly and comes from a brand that has been producing health-focused supplements for many years now - albeit, somewhat controversially (Dave Asprey is also the founder of ‘Bulletproof Coffee’ which can split the crowd a bit when it comes to health benefits.)

Regardless - the nutrition label shows it to be a relatively good source of calcium, iron, and vitamin K2. Plus, it also features a solid 30-day money-back guarantee if you decide it’s not the one for you.

Swolverine's Greens + Reds supplement features a unique blend of natural ingredients - aiming to deliver a combination of nutrient-dense greens and antioxidant-rich reds.

The ingredients included are all in decent concentrations with all quantities of each ingredient clearly listed as well which is a refreshing and welcome change in the greens powder space.

The supplement also contains digestive enzymes papain, protease, and MCT oil which work to enhance nutrient absorption.

Furthermore - all Swolverine products are independently 3rd party tested by Lief and Micro Quality labs - an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory - making them a strong candidate in many key areas.

22.) SuperBeets vs Athletic Greens

Super Beets Black Cherry

We are venturing outside the realms of what can be called a ‘greens powder’ here - however, this is a popular product that potential buyers often put side-by-side with AG1 - so, here it is - Humann SuperBeets powder.

Available in 2 flavours, SuperBeets is designed entirely with the focus of helping to support healthy blood and heart function via concentrated levels of nitric oxide - a compound found naturally in beetroot.

The brand works in conjunction with the University Of Texas, is NSF certified for sports and has a solid money-back guarantee, however, its average customer review score sits a bit lower than many other products in this list.

23.) Ghost Greens vs Athletic Greens

Ghost Greens

Ghost Greens offers a blend of organic greens and reds along with prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes designed to optimise for improving gut health. The supplement comes in 4 flavours (Original, Lime, Guava Berry & Iced Tea Lemonade) and is vegan-friendly, gluten-free and soy-free.

Moreover, it also boasts a label that specifies the exact doses of every ingredient used in the powder.

Ghost Greens is packed with 9 antioxidant-rich superfoods like Camu Camu, jabuticaba, and organic goji berries, plus a clinically-proven dose of Spectra™ that supports energy generation and increases NO2 levels. This study declares no conflict of interest with Ghost Greens either.

Ghost Greens stand out as a well-liked greens powder with decent concentrations of individual ingredients that you can actually break down due to their use of a nicely detailed nutritional label. Many reviewers mention ‘transparent 3rd party testing’ - however, I can’t find it on their website - so if you happen to spot it, send me the link so I can update this!

24.) Garden Of Life vs Athletic Greens

Garden of Life Green Superfood

Garden of Life is widely-known for making dietary supplements with all-natural components and little environmental impact.

In fact, they’re one of the first carbon-neutral supplement manufacturers on the market and all of their products - gummies, chewable, powders, or sprays - contain clean, traceable, organic, and non-GMO components.

Their Greens Juice Powder is packed with 40 organically grown greens, sprouts, and vegetable juices and is a nutrient-dense supplement that proposes several health benefits - including aiding digestion and promoting a healthy gut with its blend of soluble and insoluble fibres. Additionally, the product contains a variety of essential nutrients such as antioxidants, enzymes, amino acids, essential fatty acids, phytonutrients, and chlorophyll.

The reviews from customers so far often talk about ‘a strong earthy taste’, however, that hasn’t stopped them from getting generally positive reviews across the board.

25.) Mud Wtr vs Athletic Greens

Mud Wtr

Mud Wtr isn’t actually a greens powder at all - it’s a functional mushroom-based coffee substitute that has found its place on this list as many people are looking to compare it with Athletic Greens.

It is made with organic, non-GMO, and sustainably sourced ingredients from India and the Dominican Republic and has been designed to provide a natural energy support, increased focus and immune support without the jitters or crashes of coffee.

Mud Wtr doesn’t deliver any substantial nutrition and I personally don’t think it’s comparable to AG1 - as each product is trying to achieve very different things. Still, Mud Wtr may be an option worth trying if you want to reduce your coffee intake and increase the number of mushrooms and antioxidants in your diet for overall health.

26.) Arbonne Greens vs Athletic Greens

Arbonne Superfood Greens Spirulina

Arbonne Greens contains a blend of 36 fruits and vegetables, including nutrient-dense blue-green algae derived from spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass, and barley grass.

Aside from a greens blend, the product also packs in a series of ‘blues’ (e.g. Blueberry, Blackcurrant, Purple Sweet Potato and Elderberry), ‘reds’ (e.g. Pomegranate, Cherry, Red Coffee Bean and Tomato) and ‘yellows’ (e.g. Pumpkin, Carrot, Sweet Potato, Papaya and Mango) to round out its nutritional profile.

The product claims to be free from artificial colours, flavours, or sweeteners and showcases a number of industry certifications (e.g. Gluten Free, Vegan, B-Corp & Kosher), however, doesn’t provide links to any 3rd party testing for heavy metals, moulds or other contaminants.

As another point to consider - Arbonne has been at the centre of its fair share of well-publicised controversy, facing accusations of pushing unsubstantiated health claims as well as having its work ethics and business model called into question due to employee payment complaints.

29.) Field Of Greens vs Athletic Greens

Brickhouse Field of Greens

Field of Greens by Brickhouse Nutrition is a super greens powder that contains 100% natural USDA organic fruits and vegetables. The formula is vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free, and over 95% of the ingredients are organic.

The brand claims that the product can support the immune system, aid in detoxing, increase energy levels, and support a healthy metabolism, however, the lack of supporting research and certifications on its website may leave many doubting its effectiveness and safety profile.

The product doesn’t display any quantities of specific ingredients and in my opinion, feels much more like a nutraceutical business than a company focused on creating the best products on the market.

30.) Ladder vs Athletic Greens

Ladder Superfood Greens

Co-founded by industry juggernauts Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lebron James - Ladder Supplements definitely has some star power behind it.

Ladder Supergreens has a small but potent ingredients list that are all listed in individual quantities and NSF Certified for Sport, making them a good choice for those heavily involved with sport and performance.

While Ladder Superfood Greens doesn't offer the broadest spectrum of vitamins and minerals, it targets the nutrients that most people are likely to need, like Vitamin D, magnesium, and K vitamins. It contains a well-dosed array of key vitamins and minerals as well as a few other effective ingredients like matcha, Rhodiola rosea and beetroot extract, which can help with stress management and inflammation.

32.) Patriot Power Greens vs Athletic Greens

Patriot Power Green

Patriot Power Greens is a supplement produced by Patriot Health Alliance, a company based in Texas, USA. Their products are primarily targeted towards senior citizens in the US, and they support the US Armed Forces by making donations from every 3 or 5 canister orders placed.

Patriot Power Greens comes in two sizes: a single 160g size canister and a “double-sized” canister, both of which provide 30 servings at 5g per serving

The product contains a blend of forty fruits and vegetables, along with probiotics and digestive enzymes. However, as is common with most greens powders - the exact amounts of each ingredient are not specified due to the use of proprietary blends.

Vitamin and mineral concentrations appear relatively low, however, the product has a super unique ‘200% money back guarantee’ within the first 30 days and a 100% lifetime guarantee beyond that - so you can’t accuse them of a lack of conviction in their product!

Texas SuperFood

Texas Superfood Greens is a supplement comprised of 55 raw, non-GMO, and pesticide-free fruits and vegetables. It’s also soy and gluten-free for those with sensitivity issues to these ingredients.

Its unique blend sources ingredients solely from the U.S., however, the specific amounts of each ingredient aren't listed on the label, which might be a concern for some.

Ease of use is a major advantage for many, with the option to consume this product in capsule form or as a powder mixed into beverages. For us, the nutritional label leaves a lot to be desired in terms of transparency and detail - and there is no evidence of independent 3rd party testing on their site either.

34.) Vitamineral Green vs Athletic Greens

Vitamineral Green

Vitamineral Green, by HealthForce SuperFoods, is a raw, vegan superfood powder consisting of a variety of green foods, sea vegetables, and active botanicals.

With no sugars or sweeteners of any kind, this is probably the ‘greenest’ tasting greens powder on this list with users typically in love with the idea, or outraged. That being said - this powder seems to be reviewed very well across the board by a pretty passionate customer base.

They do use a number of proprietary blends which doesn’t disclose individual ingredient quantities, however, the brand appears to put a good focus on product safety and purity, displaying various manufacturing and contaminant testing certifications.

Vega Proteing and Greens

Vega Protein + Greens is a plant-based protein powder supplement, enriched with a serving of greens.

It offers 20 grams of protein from varied sources and includes organic spinach, kale, alfalfa and broccoli as the key ‘greens’ components.

Even though this is a common comparison product to AG! - it is really more of a protein powder than a greens powder in my opinion and isn’t much of a ‘like for like’ comparison.

36.) Balance Of Nature vs Athletic Greens

Balance Of Nature Fruits and Veggie supplements

Balance of Nature Greens is a dietary supplement that combines a variety of fruits, vegetables, and spices in a compact form. Its key selling point is its all-natural approach; the product claims to retain the pure, unprocessed nutritional content of the ingredients used.

Each serving includes essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants derived from a mix of 15 different fruits and vegetables (proprietary blends), without any artificial additives, flavours, or preservatives.

Unfortunately, the company received a warning from the FDA in 2019 due to not meeting its Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and the brand also cites highly questionable research. They also make claims about third-party testing but appear to provide no proof of those claims on their website.

37.) Cytogreens vs Athletic Greens

Allmax Cytogreens

AllMax’s CytoGreens powder is a ‘green superfood blend’ of 28 ingredients in decent concentrations, covering a wide variety of different components designed to address a range of dietary and health aspects.

The product is designed with athletes in mind and cites a lot of scientific studies and includes a lot of patented technology claimed to help improve athletic performance.

They showcase a transparent ingredient list with all quantities of each ingredient clearly listed and claim to be independently 3rd party tested for contaminants - however, I can’t find a link for any results at this point.

Users seem generally positive about the product across the board with the only common complaint being taste (not uncommon for first-time greens powder buyers) and a bit too much caffeine from the matcha green tea.

39.) Kylea vs Athletic Greens

Kylea Total Living Greens

Kylea Greens, also known as Kylea Health & Energy's Total Living Drink Greens, falls more into the ‘complete nutrition’ category rather than the greens powder category.

The product contains over 60 separate components to create a blend of nine different supplements in one:

  1. Protein
  2. Fruits, vegetables, grasses & algae

  9. Minerals

Kylea Greens is a whole food dietary supplement powder that contains everything you’d need from a greens powder:

  • Digestive enzymes
  • Probiotics
  • Amino Acids
  • Proteins
  • Vitamins
  • Antioxidants

They have relatively transparent labelling, with most ingredients shown in their exact doses, however, some still fall under ‘proprietary blend’. We can’t find any links for independent 3rd party safety or purity testing either.

They are a pretty good ‘like for like’ comparison with AG1 in terms of what they are attempting to produce (’foundational nutrition’) - so could be worth further investigation if they have piqued your interest.

40.) Plexus vs Athletic Greens

Plexus Greens Nutrition Series

Plexus is a dietary supplement brand that sells various products designed to help improve overall health. The company is best known for its weight loss products, but currently, there is no solid evidence to confirm the effectiveness of Plexus supplements for weight loss.

Similarly, there doesn’t seem to be a great deal of research behind their greens powder blend with most ingredients showing quite low concentrations. Furthermore, I can’t find any evidence of third-party testing.

They appear to be more of an MLM business rather than a producer focused on producing the best products possible.

BioSteel Sport Greens

BioSteel Greens is a greens powder supplement that focuses on providing a blend of fruits, vegetables, and herbs, enriched with vitamins and minerals. Key ingredients include organic kale, broccoli, spinach, and a range of antioxidant-rich berries.

The product is vegan-friendly, non-GMO, and free from gluten, soy, and artificial flavours or sweeteners. It is widely endorsed by numerous top-flight performers and is a key partner for numerous NHL, NBA, and MLB athletes.

It is one of the cheaper powders on this list but notably doesn’t offer a money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied. The proportions of ingredients used to make up the blend are also very hard to determine.

Lean Greens is a health and weight-loss supplement brand that produces several products.

Their ‘SuperGreens’ is designed to provide a concentrated dose of nutrients derived from a variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and probiotics.

The product is typically well-reviewed with most customers seemingly happy with the taste and results.

44.) Vegegreens vs Athletic Greens

Progressive VegeGreens

VegeGreens, from Progressive Nutrition, is a plant-based nutritional supplement that combines a wide spectrum of over 60 land, sea, and cruciferous vegetables, as well as super green foods, plant oils, phytonutrients, herbs & extracts, and botanicals.

Offering much more than simple greens blend, the formulation appears to be well thought out from a ‘covering all bases’ approach with a wide range of different ingredients all listed in their exact quantities.

They make mention of various testing and quality guidelines on the site which does sound comprehensive - however, there are no links available to look deeper into the results.

That’s A Wrap!

There you go! An exhaustive list of all the greens powders we can find on the market right now - compared in relation to the undisputed ‘king of the mountain’ - Athletic Greens. It’s now up to you to dive a bit deeper into the ones that caught your attention and see what suits your preferences, budget and ‘non-negotiable’ compromises.

As you probably already know, out of all the natural health supplements you can find on the market today, super green powders are amongst some of the newest - they’re also one of the hardest to scrutinise as well!

We realise that many manufacturers tend to make huge claims and seldom back them up with studies and transparent information on their ingredients label.

Still, while you can never truly completely “out supplement” an unhealthy diet, a high-quality super greens supplement may make up for the lacking nutrients in your daily diet and confer some noticeable benefits to your health.
