Teelixir Mushroom Matcha Latte - with Lion’s Mane & Peppermint.

With spongy tissue just like the human brain, lion’s mane mushroom is known for its powerful cognitive benefits. Also called 'the hedgehog mushroom', lion's mane is a popular go-to for helping to combat heart disease, remedy digestive problems, slow ageing, improve memory, and treat depression, amongst other things.

By adding ceremonial grade matcha to the mix, this gluten-free blend adds overlapping cognitive benefits, along with many other health-promoting properties. Teelixir tops things off with organic peppermint to naturally sweeten the taste, and give the digestive system a good refresh.

The scruffy star of the show is really the Lion’s Mane mushroom. It’s gained recent popularity from “biohackers” and high-performers who take it to increase their focus, clarity and concentration.

The Teelixir Mushroom Matcha Latte is loaded with a range of impressive health benefits we’ll cover the whole range below so you can decide if it’s right for you.

Teelixir MUSHROOM MATCHA LATTE REVIEW BY TANNER - BIRCHER BAR Head WRITER & Reviewer:

What I Like About It:

Sharpened Focus, Lightened Mood – As a writer, I have to spend countless hours at my chair staring at a screen, and crafting compelling content line after line is mentally fatiguing. I have to work in short increments at times.

After having a mug full every day for two weeks, I notice myself being able to sit at my desk for longer periods without feeling like I need to take a break. I'm less fidgety and feel like I can maintain my focus and concentration for hours more than usual. This may be both from the Lion's Mane and the green tea.

After about a month of using it, I've also noticed subtle improvements in mood -  feeling 'lighter' about life, generally. It seems easier for negative thoughts to leave, and I’m focusing more on essential things in the here-and-now.

Crisp, Subtle Sweetness – The first thing that reaches my taste buds are bitter-earthy flavours – a trademark of green tea and classic matcha lattes. This is the same whether served hot or iced. Quickly, a sweetness seeps in that’s subtle and counteracts the bitterness. The peppermint is added only as a hint, but I love that I'm not overpowered by it.

Outstanding Product & Company – Teelixir is dedicated to sourcing the best raw ingredients and crafting ancient medicines into fantastic formulas. The products are certified organic + gluten-free and also extensively tested for all forms of metals, contaminants and moulds.

We absolutely love that they mesh multiple tonic herbs together for a potent blend of curative benefits. Their mix of common and uncommon herbs is artful craftsmanship.

We share their same vision of spreading the word of these regenerative holistic medicines and supporting health-conscious choices. We think it's a beautiful matcha latte blend and a great step in the direction of better well-being.

What I Think Could Be Improved:

The Teelixir Mushroom Matcha Latte has been good to me personally, but it's worth noting that Lion’s Mane may cause an allergic reaction in a very small number of people. If you have a general mushroom allergy approach with caution, and consult your general health practitioner prior to use.

Also - it isn't a traditional matcha powder by any sense, if you're looking for a pure ceremonial grade powder, we recommend something like Kenko Tea's organic powder.

In Summary:

Pros:

  • Helps to hone focus and improve concentration

  • Full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories

  • Elevates mood and calms the mind

  • Certified organic, gluten-free, vegan and sugar-free

  • Much nicer flavour than a classic ceremonial grade matcha latte in my opinion

Cons:

  • Lion’s Mane could cause an allergic reaction in a very small amount of people

Health Benefits of the Teelixir Mushroom Matcha Latte:

All three herbs in this blend have extensive healing qualities that have been widely documented and used for thousands of years. Lion’s Mane’s healing ability has been revered in ancient cultures for millennia. Green tea has been hailed globally for centuries because of its numerous health benefits. Peppermint has also been recognised to treat a range of different ailments.

Lion’s Mane Mushroom:

The Latin name “Hericium Erinaceus” literally translates to hedgehog mushroom because the fungus is orb-shaped with long, hairy spines. People think it most resembles a lion's Mane; hence its English namesake.

It’s known as an all-star nootropic, which is a supplement that augments cognitive ability. As a certified organic, Teelixir grows a pristine Lion's Mane mushroom.

Ceremonial Grade Matcha Green Tea:

Matcha is made from high-quality green tea that is skillfully stone-ground to a powder. Preparing this way makes all of its beneficial compounds up to 10x more bioavailable! Matcha is made from young Camellia sinensis leaves and buds before they undergo withering and oxidation. Matcha is an important 'ceremonial' drink in many Asian cultures - Teelixir sources fantastic ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha for this blend.

Peppermint:

Coming from the Mentha piperita plant, peppermint leaves can be used dried or fresh in teas. It originated in Europe as a sweetener but is now produced and used all over the world. It adds flavour and fragrance to a variety of foods, and is famous for aiding with digestion and upset stomachs.

To briefly outline some of the indicated benefits of these ingredients:

  • Supports a robust immune system
  • Aids brain and nervous system function
  • May help memory
  • Aids with blood cholesterol regulation
  • Helps alleviate stress and anxiety
  • Powerful anti-inflammatory
  • Assists with digestion and gastrointestinal problems
  • Indicated to reduce the risk of heart disease

Let's dive a bit deeper into some of the most evidence-backed benefits below.

1) Can Assist The Brain and Nervous System:

Lion’s Mane is truly unique, naturally possessing significant quantities of two compounds called Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). BDNF acts as a sort of “miracle-gro” for the brain.

BDNF is a type of protein that stimulates the growth of new brain cells and pathways in the brain. BDNF also builds brain neuroplasticity, which means it can help defend your brain cells and neural pathways against stress and makes them stronger.

Lion's Mane stimulates the production of (NGF) which repairs damaged nerve tissue, regenerates nerve fibres, and improves communication between nerve endings.

2) Can Improve Memory, Cognition, & Focus:

Lion's Mane has been extensively researched, with many clinical trials indicating noticeable positive changes in focus, concentration and cognition. It is fast becoming one of the most popular natural nootropics available.

Green tea is also a formidable foe against disintegrating brain functions. Research has indicated that it shows promise in the treatment of cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s.

3) Can Aid With Depression and Anxiety:

While there are many causes of depression and anxiety, research indicates that chronic inflammation could play a big role in many cases. Several animal studies have found that Lion's Mane has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce symptoms of stress and depression, with other trials indicating it can improve the area of the brain that processes memories and emotional responses.

4) Soothes and Strengthens the Stomach:

Stomach ulcers are sores that form in the lining of the stomach walls that can be caused by issues like an overgrowth of a bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori. Studies indicate that lion’s mane can help protect the stomach lining by inhibiting the growth of H. pylori.

The peppermint in this blend also furthers digestive benefits - widely known to help with stomach pain and discomfort.

How to Prepare It:

This is a beautifully simple and delicious latte to prepare, with my favourite go-to recipe taking only a few ingredients and a couple of minutes!

Check it out below:

INGREDIENTS:

METHOD:

  • Combine the Teelixir Mushroom Matcha Latte blend and coconut milk in a small saucepan.
  • Heat the mix on a stovetop at medium heat and remove just before boiling.
  • Pour and enjoy! If you prefer it sweeter, add honey or maple and stir through

It's also a great blend to use in baking and desserts in the same way you'd use straight ceremonial grade matcha. Think muffins, cake and ice-cream!
