Shen herbs for mood, calming, focus and deep meditation:
Shen is traditionally (roughly) thought of as being your 'spirit' or 'wisdom', responsible for helping to lighten the mood and cultivate calm, deep focus and inner strength.
This skilful blend of top Shen herbs and mushrooms is designed to support your nervous system & immune response while also helping your mind relax, focus and attain better concentration in practices such as meditation, yoga and movement.
SuperFeast Shen BLEND REVIEW BY DARCY - BIRCHER BAR FOUNDER & OWNER:
What I Like About It:
Noticeable Calm & Focus - As indicated by SuperFeast themselves, the Shen blend is specifically formulated to help you drop into deeper states of calm and relaxation to help with better sleep & meditation, as well as 'lighten your spirit'.
I've been using Shen herbs (such as reishi) for sleep and relaxation for many years now, and this Shen blend is a step better again.
I've been using it half an hour before yoga and meditation sessions (noticing much better focus with a better ability to stay 'present'), as well as in conjunction with Yoga Nidra before bed for seriously improved sleep quality (both unbroken and restful).Love The Taste - Reishi, the primary herb in the Shen blend, is renowned for its bitter flavour, however, the added combination of other Shen herbs in this mix such as longan berry and aged citrus peel give the extract a delicious and slightly sweet orange & berry type flavour. It lends itself to many different recipes - a couple of which I'll detail for you further in this article.
A Masterful Formulation - As with all SuperFeast extracts and offerings, the Shen blend is completely sustainable and ethical to the highest standards. Each ingredient in this mix has been sourced Di Tao from its home growing region and dual extracted for the highest possible potency and effectiveness.
Everything is extensively tested for purity, and everyone in the SuperFeast growing and producing process is treated fairly and warmly.
SuperFeast truly know their craft - I’ve worked closely with SuperFeast for years and are always confident when speaking to the quality of their extracts and practices.
What I Think Could Be Improved:
In my opinion - there is nothing to 'improve', just note that if you aren't familiar with tonic herbs and medicinal mushrooms that's it's always best to start out with a small dose and see how your body and constitution reacts.
There is nothing 'unsafe' about this blend, it's simply that everyone is different and may have a different response when a new substance is introduced to the body.
Ease yourself in and you ever have any concerns - make sure you contact your GP or medical practitioner for specific advice.
- Noticeable effects on mood and focus
- One of the best tasting tonic herb blends I've come across
- A guaranteed quality product from a great company
- Nothing to speak of other than taking general caution with a new supplement

WHAT IS THE SHEN BLEND?
This is a potent and powerful mix of Shen herbs sourced and grown in the ancient Di Tao tradition.
It has been skillfully formulated to replenish 'Shen' from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, resulting in better states of relaxation, mood & focus.
Many of these ingredients have become the focus of many modern studies that are more often than not, supporting many of the health benefits spoken of in Chinese Medicine!
Before diving into the ingredients of Shen Blend below, check out this quick video by Mason giving you all the insights you need on exactly what Shen is and how it works in Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Shen Blend contains:
As the most important Shen herb (and one of the most revered in the entire Daoist system), Reishi is very famous for its ability to help alleviate stress, calm the mind and improve sleep. Modern science has shown its potential to help increase immunity as well as regulate the nervous and endocrine systems.
2.) Albizia Flower (Albizia julibrissin)
Albizia (or Albizzia) is famously known as 'the happiness herb' for its ability to help relieve anxiety, stress and depression. One of the most prized Shen herbs in Daoist herbalism, this slightly sweet flower is a key player in this mix.
3.) Asparagus Root (Asparagus cochinchinensis)
The final 'primary action' Shen herb in this blend, Asparagus Root has been used for generations in meditation and ceremony. Aside from promoting calm and focus, it's also known for its lung health and skin benefits.
4.) Spirit Poria (Scierotium Pararadicis Poriae Cocos.)
Spirit Poria is a special variety of the poria mushroom that comprises the mushroom sclerotium as well as a portion of the pine tree root on which it's grown. This unique version of Poria is prized in Shen herbalism and is often used to help with memory anxiety, restlessness, tension, nervousness and fatigue.
5.) Pearl Powder (Margarita)
Pearl powder is one of the most prized Shen-system beauty promoting extracts in oriental medicine and is also a key part of SuperFeast's flagship Beauty Blend as well. With powerfully high levels of antioxidants, trace minerals and amino acids - pearl powder has been used for millennia to treat skin health issues.
6.) Polygala Flower (Polygala tenuifolia.)
Known as Yuan Zhi in TCM, Polygala is thought to have many beneficial effects on the brain - assisting with focus, memory and mood. From a 'Shen perspective', Polygala translates to 'profound will' and fortifies the mind to help achieve goals and develop resilience.
7.) Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa.)
Rehmannia is a very common when herb and used widely in many different Chinese Medicines. It is often used to promote deeper sleep and relaxation, as well as inflammation and building healthy blood.
8.) Aged Citrus Peel (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae)
Tangerine skin has been used in TCM for over 2000 years now and is powerfully rich in Vitamin C and flavonoids. As a shen herb, it is included to promote lung health and help with strong blood flow
9.) Longan Berry (Dimocarpus longan.)
Longan Berry has long been used as a natural remedy to fortify brain health and help treat insomnia, memory issues and anxiety. It is said to have a supporting action on the primary when herbs in this blend, assisting and strengthening their action.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF SuperFeast Shen BLEND:
The shen herbs and mushrooms in this mix are all 'adaptogenic' - meaning they work in the body to help it manage and deal with many different stresses and ailments as they present.
This particular blend is centred around ingredients that Traditional Chinese Medicine has used for millennia to help calm the mind and foster emotional stability.
Studies are still quite thin on the ground, however, Western Medicine is increasingly finding that many of these supplements are providing potent health benefits in much the same way that traditional medicine has described.
This Shen blend may help you with:
- Managing anxiety and depression
- Treating insomnia and poor sleep
- Relaxation and meditation practices
- Improving skin health and conditions
- Boosting lung strength
- Better blood flow and organ health
HOW TO TAKE SuperFeast Shen BLEND:
Shen has a delicious subtle sweetness with an ever so slight bitter note from the reishi. This makes it one of the most versatile powdered herb extract from the SuperFeast range - lending itself perfectly for everything from coffee, tea and hot chocolates through to smoothies, juices and breakfast bowls.
A great place to start is with SuperFeasts own 'Heart Wide Open' Elixir - I've put the recipe below for you:
Ingredients: - Makes 1 serve
- 1 cup hot water
- 3 tbs coconut milk
- 1/4 - 1 tsp SHEN blend
- 1 - 2 tsp of your favourite sweetener (I prefer manuka honey or maple syrup)
- 2 tsp rose water
- 1 tsp raw cacao
- Pinch of salt
- Put all in the blender, blend & pour into your favourite cup.
As for dosage with any recipe you choose - start with ¼ to ½ tsp daily for the first week or two, and build up to 1 tsp per day as your body adjusts.
What is in SuperFeast Shen?:
Reishi, albizia flower, asparagus root, spirit poria, micro-ground pearl powder, polygala, prepared rehmannia root, longan berry & aged citrus peel extract powders.
How should I store my herbs?:
To keep your herbs super fresh, store them in a cool dry place like a kitchen pantry to stop them from clumping. Each jar or bag contains a desiccant (a little white pillow) to absorb moisture. Bulk bags can also be stored in a sealed container in the freezer.
When will I see results?:
There is no cut and dry answer for this question as everybody is unique. Some people may feel benefits immediately while for others it may take a couple of weeks to a month before they feel the shifts within their body. The most important thing with medicinal mushrooms is longevity and consistency as their potent medicinal benefits accumulate over time. SuperFeast recommends taking one or more of their products regularly for at least 30-100 days to really allow them to unfold in your system.
Shen is a beautiful herb, used to calm the mind and nourish the spirit. Shen herbs have been used for millenia and are loved as much today as they always have been, a fact reflected by its 5-star reviews across the board:
- "I love how SHEN really does give the feeling of having a joyful spirit. I use it with my meditative practices and am loving the experience. Top quality product from a top quality company. I have purchased their products for several of my family members. I will be a repeat customer for many years to come." - Christine N
- "I've absolutely loved my Shen herbs! I got massive benefits from using the Jing herbs and since I was no longer fatigued (thanks Jing) but still feeling a bit flat and uninspired, I decided to try the Shen. I noticed straight away feeling brighter and experiencing and elevated mood. I love them and am so happy with them. I'll be taking them consistently over at least a few months to fully integrated the benefits." - Alex H
- "A beautiful and nourishing blend. Wonderful quality herbs that taste delicious and are easy to enjoy" - Sarah G
With Shen being one of the three treasures of the Daoist herbal system - it's highly recommended you pair it with the other two treasures (Qi & Jing) for a holistic and all-encompassing TCM approach:
Teelixir is another one of my favourite suppliers of medicinal mushrooms. Their Reishi is a potent, high-quality mushroom powder used to promote mental well-being, calmness, and generally elevate the spirit.
Qi ('Chi' or 'Ki') is the lifeforce energy in all living things and is generally understood as 'energy'. Combining 7 of the most revered Qi herbs in existence, this blend pairs perfectly with Shen to increase your base energy and vitality, increase immunity and help alleviate stress and anxiety
Jing is the first treasure of Daoist herbalism and literally translates to 'essence'. According to TCM, it is the precursor to both Qi and Shen and is a crucial pairing for both. Jing combines 6 of the most recognised and celebrated tonic herbs to help counter exhaustion, fatigue, stamina issues and hormonal imbalance.
