Eucommia Bark – A Superb Herb for Strong Bones, Joints, Ligaments, and Kidney Health!
Eucommia Bark (Eucommia ulmoides) is one of the primary adaptogenic herbs in traditional Chinese tonic herbalism for building a strong, sturdy, flexible skeletal structure and is used to help strengthen the bones, ligaments and tendons.
Grown in the magnificent Chiang Bai mountains that graced the movie Avatar, the Eucommia tree has a distinctive bark. The robust “rubber tree” primarily supports a healthy skeletal system, with added strength to tendons and ligaments, but also promotes kidney vitality that boosts libido, protects the cardiovascular system, and lowers blood pressure.
SuperFeast calls Eucommia Bark one of their “bread and butter” herbs, because of the potency and wide range of ailments the Eucommia bark treats, such as arthritis, sexual dysfunction, metabolic syndromes, and neurological diseases.
SUPERFEAST EUCOMMIA BARK REVIEW BY DARCY - BIRCHER BAR FOUNDER & OWNER:
What I Like About It:
Decreases pain & inflammation – I don’t have any chronic pain or arthritic problems, however, I do have an extremely active lifestyle and tend to be nursing soft tissue injuries here and there.
When I was consistent with it and using it daily, I definitely noticed that my soft tissue injuries (sprains, strains and muscle pulls) were less frequent and healed much quicker. I also noticed I recovered from exercise easier with less stiffness and soreness - an absolute win for anyone who loves an active lifestyle!
It’s palatable – SuperFeast’s Eucommia Bark is one of the better-tasting herbs available - you can simply stir it into some hot water as it brings a simplistic sweet flavour that’s reminiscent of chamomile tea.
Affordable – Dealing with body pain is something everyone eventually faces. There are so many diets, supplements, routines etc. being thrown at us, it’s hard to know what works. All you can do is feel it out for yourself and find what works for your body - as Eucommia is so affordable, easy on the body and offers such a wide range of health benefits, I believe it is a great [place to start.
Incredible Product & Company – If it isn’t apparent at this point, we admire SuperFeast. Their dedication to the harvesting process, outstanding customer service, and mission to change the holistic medicine landscape garnish our trust year after year.
They source all their herbs and medicines organically in their natural habitat to produce the purest, most potent products for their customers.
A Word of Caution About It:
I haven't experienced any problems with SuperFeast Eucommia bark, but it could cause an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to latex. Eucommia is a naturally occurring source of latex, which can cause itchy skin and rashing.
There are also notes about being careful using Eucommia if you have estrogen-dependent cancer.
In Summary
PROS
- Noticeably decreases muscle and joint pain
- Helps improve flexibility
- Assists the cardio-vascular system
- Nourishes the immune system
- Overall - a super high-quality product from an excellent company
CONS
- The natural latex in the bark could cause a skin allergy in some people

What is Eucommia Bark?
The Eucommia tree natively grows in central China and is referred to as Duzhong – after a man who supposedly took the Eucommia herb and found enlightenment. The genus name Eucommia means “good gum,” referring to the mucosal membrane of the bark.
If you tear the bark at any seam, you will notice the mucosal membrane, which looks a bit like the threads of spider webs. Many people attribute the bark's ability to promote healthy bones, joints, and ligaments to this membrane.
SuperFeast harvests the bark sporadically, and in small segments, so the tree isn’t damaged and continues to reproduce. The trees grow in their natural Chinese habitat without any pesticides or fertilizers, and the bark is harvested after eight years of growth.

Health Benefits of Eucommia:
Eucommia bark (Eucommia ulmoides)has been revered by Taoist herbalists for over 2,500 years for its ability to aid the body with increased strength, energy, and power. Traditional science has identified several beneficial properties in the bark, such as being an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antimicrobial, antiaging, and cardio/neuro-protectant.
To briefly outline some of the most commonly recognised and researched benefits:
- Supports a robust immune system
- A potent anti-inflammatory
-
Treats joint and bone pain
- Tonify Kidney & Liver
- Helps alleviate stress and fatigue
- Supports a healthy libido
- Improves physical performance
- Slows the ageing process
- Increases energy, strength, and endurance
- Fights against cancer
- Regulates blood pressure & cholesterol
- Healing of knees and lower back
-
Protects against neurological conditions
Let's dive deeper into some of the most evidence-backed benefits below.
1.) Promoting the Cardiovascular System:
People popularly use Eucommia bark in treating cardiovascular problems, which are typically caused by high blood pressure and cholesterol. Several studies confirm Eucommia is a potent antihypertensive and vasorelaxant.
One study administered 500mg/1kg of Eucommia to rats for 16 weeks, which reduced the mean arterial blood pressure of the rats. Another study applied 1 gram of Eucommia extract to 30 healthy adult humans three times per day for two weeks. After two weeks, the average blood pressure dropped by 7.5/3.9 mmHg.
2.) Antioxidants Preventing Aging:
The Eucommia plant has antioxidant compounds that reduce the level of free radicals – unstable atoms that damage cells in the body that cause the ageing process to accelerate.
One study gave mice Eucommia leaves and found that the mice tested lower in levels of hydrogen peroxide, which is an oxygen-derived free radical.
Several studies demonstrate Eucommia's ability to lessen the body's inflammation response. Eucommia reduces the secretion of cytokines – protein molecules that are triggered by the immune system to mediate inflammation in the body.
3.) Alleviating Inflammation:
Several studies demonstrate Eucommia's ability to lessen the body's inflammation response. Eucommia reduces the secretion of cytokines – protein molecules that are triggered by the immune system to mediate inflammation in the body.
Eucommia negates the proinflammatory cytokines known as tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and IL-1β by human monocytic (THP-1).
4.) Neuroprotective Effects:
There is a wealth of scientific evidence showing chemicals in Eucommia stave off memory loss and cognitive impairment.
One study induced cognitive impairment in mice and tested their level of learning and memory. The mice were then given Eucommia stem extract, tested again, and they all showed higher levels of cognitive learning and memory.
How to Take Eucommia Bark
As previously mentioned, Eucommia’s flavour is sweet, subtle, and delightful, so it blends nicely into any cup of tea or coffee.
Combining both Eucommia and Astragalus can deliver huge immune-boosting benefits and a beautiful flavour combo!
My favourite way to take when I'm short for time is to simply stir 1 tsp in with hot water, a spritz of lemon juice and a dash of raw honey - easy as that!
As for dosage, it's recommended to start with ¼ to ½ tsp daily for the first couple of weeks, and then increase to 1 heaped tsp per day as your body adapts.
