Coffee Press

AeroPress Coffee Maker REVIEW BY DARCY - BIRCHER BAR FOUNDER & OWNER:

The AeroPress is widely regarded as one of the best manual coffee makers on the planet and has been my number one pick for many years now. I've travelled with it all over the place and it's made far superior coffee than any of the $1000 + benchtop espresso machines I've come across. If you've got access to hot water & ground coffee, you'll always have a great coffee on hand!

In my opinion due to the pressure created in the chamber, Aeropress coffee is closer to espresso than filter coffee, typically producing a richer, more full-bodied flavour than a batch brew, pour-over or traditional French Press.

It is versatile and pretty forgiving when it comes to grind size and coffee styles (black coffee vs milk coffee), but there are definitely a few simple recipes and 'best practices' that help produce consistently great coffee (read recipes below).

It's the easiest to clean and most portable coffee maker I've found, packing down to less than 500g including the paddle, scoop, funnel and filters. In all my experimenting my favourite coffee to use is Old Quarter Myanmar P'ao, ground in the Porlex Hand Grinder - again, both are easy to travel with too.

Pros:

  • Consistently makes top-quality espresso-style coffee
  • Super portable and easy to clean - packs down small and light, perfect for camping, hiking and travelling
  • One of the best 'bang for your buck' coffee makers available - very affordable

Cons:

  • The paper filters can be a bit messy and impart some flavour to the coffee as well - I'd always recommend getting an Able Disk to go with it
  • I always prefer to avoid mixing hot water and plastic - would love to see an insulated metal AeroPress one day!

Where Can I Buy It?:

Hit the big blue button at the top of this page to check the best pricing and customer service we've found. The pricing can change quite quickly on them so we keep this link as up-to-date as possible.

If you prefer to purchase in-store too, a number of cafes and speciality coffee suppliers often stock them as well.

Espresso Maker

What is the AeroPress?:

Invented in 2005 by Aerobie company president Alan Adler, the AeroPress is a small handheld 'total immersion' coffee maker with the ability to make coffee from filter brew strength, through to espresso. It consists of two 'nesting cylinders' - one with a flexible rubber airtight seal that fits inside the second chamber in a similar way to a syringe.

The Aerobie AeroPress has fast become a brewing device known worldwide for producing outstanding coffee with simplicity in mind, in fact, it's become so iconic that there has been a documentary made about it!

As a total immersion coffee maker - it offers a consistent and easy way to brew coffee with lower acidity and without bitterness every time. The lightweight, simple-to-use and easy-to-clean design have made this everyday coffee maker known for its use while travelling - ensuring you always have a delicious brew wherever you are.

Take it camping, boating, hiking or backpacking and the AeroPress is in its element - while still remaining the perfect option for home or office use as well.
