SuperFeast Chaga

SuperFeast Chaga Mushroom REVIEW BY DARCY - BIRCHER BAR FOUNDER & OWNER:

What I Like About It:

Less Colds & Flus - I'm always hesitant to say 'X product did this for me!' as it can be hard to tell exactly what dietary / lifestyle factors result in a specific outcome. All I can do is relate my experience, which is, I've not once suffered a cold or flu when I consistently take SuperFeast Chaga (daily for 30+ days). This is unusual for me as I'm unfortunately someone who usually picks them up easily :(

To add to that, I also felt like I had improved energy levels and noticed better digestion, generally feeling less bloated and heavy after big meals.

It goes down smooth  With a smooth and light 'earthy' flavour it’s a super easy one to use, lending itself perfectly to tea, coffee and savoury dishes such as miso. Check out our 'How To Take Chaga' section further down for some links to some delicious, healthy and simple recipes.

Company Values and Service – I’ve worked intimately with SuperFeast for years and they always astound me with their wealth of holistic knowledge, trustworthy business practices, and a keen sense of what customers want in natural medicines.

They are family operated and their customer service is top-notch, with free shipping and secure payments (with AfterPay as well). You’ll feel like you are a part of the SuperFeast tribe after ordering their products.

What I Think Could Be Improved:

Not so much a suggested improvement but more of a point of caution. Chaga is recognised as a very safe medicinal mushroom, however, as it can influence blood glucose levels anyone on anti-diabetes drugs or other blood-thinning medications should consult their doctor before using.

In Summary:

PROS

  • Noticeably helps with energy levels, immunity and digestion
  • Super versatile and easy to use
  • A great supplement for people looking to improve overall health
  • A super high-quality product from an excellent company

CONS

  • Could adversely interact with diabetic or blood-thinning medications

Chaga Mushroom

What is Chaga?

Chaga mushrooms (Inonotus obliquus or Phaeoporus obliquus) are an ancient and potent medicinal mushroom, usually found growing wild in old-growth birch forests. It typically presents as a dark woody mass of birch bark and mycelium, taking on a 'congealed molasses' type appearance giving rise to one of it's most common names - 'the black mass'.

Apart from black mass, it has a bunch of other really quirky names that are fun to use like: clinker polypore, cinder conk, Birch mushroom, Black Birch Touchwood, Crooked Schiller-porling, Bai Hua Rongand my personal favourite “the sterile conk trunk rot.”

High-quality Chaga takes many years to form. As it develops, it forges a 'symbiotic relationship' with the birch tree that hosts it, with many of its health benefits derived from its ability to 'pre-digest' nutrients contained in the bark of the birch.

The relationship between Chaga and birch is a healthy one though and goes two ways, with Chaga having been found to heal sick and dying birch trees! What’s even more astounding - a third of its DNA structure is more human than it is plant!

From a medicinal viewpoint - Chaga is a potent blend of adaptogenic betulinic acid, cancer-fighting beta-glucans, revitalizing antioxidants and skin-protecting melanin. It also has a slew of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and has 19-out-of-the-20 amino acids the body uses to synthesize food into protein.

What Makes SuperFeast Chaga So Great?:

SuperFeast only harvests Chaga that has reached 8-to-10 years of growth on birch trees that are 20+ years old. This allows the Chaga to reach its full potential and potency. It is exclusively sourced according to traditional Taoist Di Tao philosophy, sustainably sourced from its natural growing region in the clean and isolated Changbai Mountains.

Their mushroom powder itself is a dual extract of the sclerotia, which is the solid shiny conk section that consists of mycelium and birch fibre. This is what is classically referred to as 'Chaga'.

Health Benefits of Chaga:

Chaga is known worldwide for its multi-faceted healing properties. It has been studied now in nearly 1000 modern clinical trials, with many well-defined health benefits recorded.

Traditionally, it's been used as a natural medicine in Chinese, Siberian, Korean, Northern European and Scandinavian cultures for millennia, having been found recorded on the earliest texts in Traditional Chinese Medicine texts.

Some of the most commonly recognised and researched benefits include:

  • Supports a robust immune system
  • A potent anti-inflammatory
  • One of the most antioxidant-rich natural substances available
  • More vibrant skin, hair and nails
  • Regulates blood sugar levels
  • Helps alleviate stress and fatigue
  • Cleanses digestive tract
  • Improves physical stamina and exercise performance
  • Slows the ageing process
  • Increases energy
  • Attack cancer cells
  • Promotes healthy cholesterol

Let’s dive in deeper on some of the most evidence-backed benefits below.

1.) Slowing the Ageing Process:

Chaga is the best natural source of the 'longevity enzyme' known as superoxide dismutase (SOD). Chaga contains more SOD than barley grass, seaweeds and even some essential oils. SOD occurs naturally in humans but declines with age, especially after age 30.

Increasing your intake of SOD helps repair cells and reduces cellular damage caused by 'superoxide' free radicals, which are thought to be one of the major causes of premature ageing.

2.) Supports Immunity:

Chaga promotes the formation and production of white blood cells which are key to fighting off harmful bacteria and viruses in the body.

The high levels of Beta-glucans activate various protective reactions in the body’s immunological and inflammatory processes. Beta-glucans increase the activity of various disease killing cells to fight against infections more efficiently and counterattack diseases more effectively. They recognize and label potentially problematic cells which lets the immune system respond better against threats.

3.) Digestive Benefits & Gut Health:

Chaga has powerful anti-inflammatory effects on the stomach and intestines, aiding with inflammatory auto-immune diseases such as IBS. It also stimulates the liver to produce digestive bile that is required to break down fats quickly, so the digestive tract doesn’t have to work so hard.

Chaga has a variety of chemicals that the body uses for digestion such as manganese, thiamin and fibre. High levels of betulinic acid and phytosterols also help combat parasitic worms in the digestive system and fight against some types of bacteria hidden in the stomach.

4.) Vibrant Skin:

Chaga has a variety of benefits for better looking, healthier and more robust skin - primarily due to containing huge amounts of melanin that add pigment and colour to skin and protect it from harmful UV rays.

Chaga’s anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting qualities also help protect skin from infections, diseases, rashes, acne, and eczema. Chaga’s potent antioxidants will help regenerate new skin and improve its elasticity, aiding with firmness and elasticity.

Mason, the SuperFeast owner, founder and herbalist extraordinaire quickly runs you through his favourite Chaga benefits in the short video below:

How to Take Chaga:

Chaga is most commonly taken as a tea, steeping whole Chaga chunks in hot water to extract the medicinal compounds. Given that the SuperFeast version is a dual-extracted mushroom powder it's much more versatile and can be used in a variety of different ways.

As previously mentioned the flavour is bitter, sweet and earthy, so it stirs in nicely with a simple chamomile, green or black tea. Alternatively, as Chaga powder isn't heat-sensitive you can easily use it in savoury dishes and soups such as Miso! I've put links to a simple tea and Miso recipe below:

  1. Simple Chaga Immuni-tea
  2. Chaga Miso

Chaga Miso

My personal favourite way to take it is simply by stirring in 1 tsp of Chaga with hot water, a dash of lemon juice and a 1/2 tsp of raw honey to sweeten. I often add a 1/2 tsp of Jing as well.

As for dosage, it's recommended to start with ¼ to ½ tsp daily and work your way up from there depending on what your body needs.

When asked about dosage, the SuperFeast team have said:

“If you are feeling good, we suggest to build up to a nice, heaped teaspoon per day. We find this is generally a good sweet spot for most individuals. We love providing our herbs in a powdered extract, it means you have full control over the dose, it allows you to experiment with the herb and really forge your own unique relationship with the herbs. As always, we suggest to trust your body; it will tell you if you want more or less.”

Customer Reviews:

Nothing less than 5-star reviews all-round for this one, not a single unhappy customer to report. Here are some of my favourites:

  • "I have been having a quarter of a teaspoon of the Chaga mushroom powder and a quarter of a teaspoon of Hemp protein powder in my morning fruit smoothie for nearly three weeks now and have just started to notice little changes in my body and the way I feel. Bowel health has improved and my skin and hair are behaving beautifully. I also have a lot more energy. I look forward to trying other products from the range. Cheers Barb" -Barbara F.

  • “Always feel a boost of energy and clarity after my morning chaga. Thank you superfeast for your excellent service.” -Cheryl B.
