"This product offers a clean vegan and sustainable source alternative to marine-derived omega-3s. Because the algae is grown in controlled conditions, the oil is naturally lower in impurities, free from ocean pollutants, and maintains a stable triglyceride form for better absorption. As a pharmacist, I find it an excellent option for those wanting high-purity DHA without relying on fish sources for plant-based options".— Isabella Truong, Pharmacist

Frequently asked question

Yes — algal oil is omega-3, just sourced differently and with different natural potencies.

Algal oil is a source of omega-3 fatty acids — specifically DHA and EPA — the same essential omega-3s found in fish oil. The key difference is where the omega-3s come from.

Fish accumulate DHA and EPA by eating micro-algae. Algal oil skips the middle step and sources these fatty acids directly from algae.

While both provide DHA/EPA, the ratios and concentrations differ between algal oil and fish oil. Algal oil is typically higher in DHA, whereas fish oil generally provides higher, more balanced EPA and DHA levels per capsule.

Neither is universally “better” — the best choice depends on your values and dietary preferences.

Algal oil is ideal if you:

  • follow a vegan or plant-based lifestyle,
  • prefer avoiding animal-derived products,
  • want an omega-3 source that bypasses fishing practices,
  • are looking for a clean, controlled-source DHA/EPA produced in contained environments (no ocean contaminants).

Fish oil, however, naturally delivers higher concentrations of EPA and DHA per capsule, and is generally more cost-effective for people seeking therapeutic anti-inflammatory or cardiovascular support.

Both are excellent omega-3 sources — the right option depends on whether purity, sustainability and plant-based sourcing matter more to you than capsule potency.

The algae is grown under controlled, sustainable conditions, ensuring it avoids ocean-borne pollutants such as mercury, arsenic and cadmium. This results in a clean, fresh, stable omega-3 product.

Yes. DHA plays an important role in healthy pregnancy and foetal development. This vegan source of DHA is ideal for women who prefer plant-based prenatal support.

Metagenics is a practitioner brand, meaning its formulas are designed with clinical dosing and quality standards. However, this product can be purchased through The Bircher Bar.
