Astragalus – Energize your Blood, Immunity, and Vitality

Astragalus is one of the most potent tonic herbs in Chinese medicine that acts as an energizer for the entire system of the body. It is one of the most common Chinese Medicine herbs that is recommended for lack of vigour and energy in one's life.

Specifically, Astragalus has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine to boost "Wei Qi" which they explain to be a protective layer of energy just under the skin that shields against disease and pathogens. Taking Astragalus is thought to help create healthy blood and promote good circulation, boost the body's immunity response, stave off the effects of ageing, tonify the liver, support the spleen and improve vitality (Qi energy).

Astragalus is recognised as one of the most important herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine and SuperFeast have produced an excellent and easy-to-take 'Di Tao' version of it.

As one of the most important qi herbs available, you'll also find Astragalus present as one of the primary ingredients in the SuperFeast Qi Blend.

SUPERFEAST ASTRAGALUS REVIEW BY DARCY - BIRCHER BAR FOUNDER & OWNER:

    What I Like About It:

Pedal to the Metal – It's a great natural alternative for energy and stamina. On that note, if you are suffering from any kind of chronic illness that relates to fatigue, Astragalus can surely help manage some of this lack of energy but we don't want to promote it will fix it. Sometimes it's more complicated than just being 'tired' so if you suffer from chronic fatigue, definitely book in to get a checkup!

One thing I can personally say is that I do notice feeling more consistently energetic throughout the day when I have been taking it regularly. It's not a 'high', more subtle but definitely noticeable.

Pleasantly Earthy Taste –  The portion of astragalus used is the root and being that roots grow underground (mostly!), astragalus unsurprisingly has a mild earthy flavour. I like to add a little bit to my morning coffee or afternoon tea, with a dash of nut milk and a touch of honey.

Incredible Product & Company –  Buyer beware - SuperFeast has an amazing array of products that pair beautifully with each other, you may end up with a cupboard full like us!

We support them in their harvesting methods, as we highly respect that they put in the effort to travel to China's rural regions to develop relationships with small family farms and procure the purest product they can.

A Word Of Caution About It:

As Astragalus is so effective in boosting the body's immunity, it could adversely interact with autoimmune syndromes and medications. If you have auto-immune syndrome, consult with your doctor before taking the root.

    In Summary

    What is Astragalus?

Also known as huáng qí or milkvetch, Astragalus is a plant root popularized by Chinese medicine as a natural energy booster. Although there are over 3,000 species of the root, there are only two used for health supplements - Astragalus membranaceus and Astragalus mongholicus.

If you encounter Astragalus in the wild, you should avoid eating it as some species have neurotoxins. For example, the breed of Astragalus in America, known as Locoweed, has caused fatality in livestock.

Bought in a supplement form, Astragalus is generally safe and is only produced with certain species that contain the desired health benefits. Astragalus has many different supplement forms, including liquid extracts, capsules, powders, and teas. Astragalus is sometimes also given as an injection or by IV in a hospital setting.

    Health Benefits of Astragalus:

Study after study shows Astragalus is a powerful herbal remedy that treats a wide range of ailments, especially with immunity and protective measures in the body. The root contains over 100 active compounds, like flavonoids that work as anti-inflammatories, antioxidants, and anti-allergenic.

To briefly outline some of the most commonly recognised and researched benefits:

    • Supports a robust immune system
    • Alleviates inflammation in the body
    • Improves blood circulation
    • Regulates blood cholesterol
    • Helps alleviate stress and anxiety
    • Tonifies the kidney
    • Regulates blood sugar levels
    • Slows the ageing process
    • Reduces the risk of heart disease
    • Fights against cancer
    • Alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy
    • Supports a robust spleen
    • Enhances heart health

Let's dive deeper into some of the most evidence-backed benefits below.

    1.) Supports a Robust Immunity:

Astralagus contains several plant compounds that help aid the body's defence mechanism and boost its immunity response. Animal research shows that Astragalus can help kill bacteria and viruses in mice with infections.

A variety of research demonstrates that Astragalus can augment white blood cells in the body that fight off infections.  One study gave 8 grams of Astragalus to 14 healthy patients for two months, and they all showed significant stimulation of white blood cells.

    2.) Improves Kidney Health:

Kidneys act as the body's filter to remove waste and unessential fluids in the body. Proper kidney function is vital for a thriving, enjoyable life. Astragalus helps kidney health by improving blood flow.

One study showed it boosts haemoglobin levels – the protein in the blood responsible for transporting oxygen through the body.

It is an excellent aid in the treatment of kidney disease. One study found that it lowers toxic levels of a protein in the body that cause kidney disease. Another study proves it can reduce kidney infection in people suffering from kidney disorders.

    3.) Enhances Heart Health:

Astragalus can help the heart function better in a variety of ways. One study showed that the flavonoids in Astralagus can widen blood vessels and increase the amount of blood that's pumped to the heart.

It is also an excellent aid in the treatment of heart conditions. One study gave patients with heart failure 2.25 grams of Astragalus twice daily for two weeks, and they all showed more improvement compared with patients that received only standard treatment.

    4.) Fights off Fatigue:

Several clinical trials demonstrate Astralagus's anti-fatigue properties.

One study gave athletes Astragalus and then tested their performance for eight weeks, and the athletes had increased exhaustion time and enhanced recovery from fatigue.

    How to Take Astragalus:

As previously mentioned, Astragalus's flavour is mildly earthy, so it blends nicely with coffee, tea, and broths or soups.

My favourite way to take it is simply by stirring in a bit with hot water, tea, or my morning coffee.

As for dosage, they recommend starting with ¼ to ½ tsp daily and working your way up from there.

    FAQs:

Where do SuperFeast get their tonic herbs from?:

Where, and how, their products are sourced is something that is super important to SuperFeast. They use the ancient method of Di Dao, sourcing herbs from their spiritual homeland, meaning all of their tonic herbs and medicinal mushrooms are sourced in and around the beautiful mountain regions of China.

    What does Astragalus taste like?:

Astragalus is sweet to the taste and so is the perfect addition to coffees, teas, smoothies etc as a sweetener.

How should I store my herbs?:

To keep your herbs super fresh, store them in a cool dry place like a kitchen pantry to stop them from clumping. Each jar or bag contains a desiccant (a little white pillow) to absorb moisture. Bulk bags can also be stored in a sealed container in the freezer.

1.) SuperFeast Reishi – The tree of life mushroom

Reishi can also improve your immunity but concentrates on other properties more than Astragalus, like calming the mind, relieving stress, and promoting heart health.

2.) SuperFeast Chaga – Slow the Hands of Time

Chaga also improves immunity, eliminates free radicals in the body that speed up ageing, and increasing stamina and energy levels. It will also do wonders for your skin!

If you want to get extra strength while lowering your fatigue, pair Astragalus with Ashwagandha. The two combined will have you performing like a formidable athlete. (That may be a slight exaggeration but you get the gist) Plus, the two names seem like they fit. 😉

For 6,000 years, people have used Ashwagandha to help restore and rejuvenate. Ashwagandha means "smell of the horse" for the pungent smell and its ability to increase people's strength. It's known to boost fertility and testosterone in men and improve brain function.

    Conclusion:

Nearly everyone can benefit from a little boost of energy into their days. As we mentioned, don't be expecting some caffeine-high but we have noticed after taking it over a few months there is a noticeable though subtle, shift in our energy.

Sarah is a big fan of Neural Nectar though sometimes says it can leave her feeling too energised and has turned to Astragalus for when she's looking for something a little less full-on. I have enjoyed the shift in my energy, that is, in an increase of a calm, uplifting feeling which results in higher productivity and motivation.

Those who are detoxing, in a process of repairing their kidney/liver or just would like to gift their organs a helping hand, may also find Astragalus an interesting avenue to explore. While helping in repair, if taken daily over prolonged periods can also help in protecting you against disease and illness.

There is good reason this is the most commonly turned to herb in Chinese Medicine for an increase of energy and vitality in one's life, but you may just have to try it to experience those reasons for yourself!
